Fans can look forward to Marvel Studios’ Loki Season 2 landing on Disney Plus later this year, despite reports of several 2023 releases being pushed back. With filming wrapped up in October 2022, excitement grows as a post-credits scene in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania teases the return of Tom Hiddleston’s beloved character, the God of Mischief. Get ready for more thrilling adventures with Loki!

Details about the plot of the superhero show’s second season remain largely under wraps, with no official trailer released beyond a glimpse shown at the D23 Expo 2022. However, recent casting updates and commentary from the cast and crew have given fans a taste of what they can expect from the upcoming season.

Please note that the following information contains spoilers for both Loki Season 1 and Ant-Man 3. If you have not yet seen these productions, you may want to avoid reading further.

Loki season 2 release date: Kevin Feige confirmed a release window

Guess what? During the latest Marvel Comic-Con announcements, Kevin Feige gave us a little hint that we might be seeing Loki Season 2 in summer 2023! But hold your horses, because the current status on Disney Plus now says ‘Coming Soon,’ so there might be a bit more of a wait.

Just to jog your memory, Loki Season 1 wrapped up filming in December 2020 and hit our screens on June 9, 2021. With Season 2 finishing up production in October 2022, we all hoped it would follow the same pattern. However, there’s been no official word on a specific release date, so it’s looking less likely that the second season will make its debut six months after filming, in April, like its predecessor. But hey, good things come to those who wait, right?

Although Marvel hasn’t released a full trailer for Loki Season 2 yet, we did get a sneak peek of some new footage in the Disney Plus 2023 trailer. The brief shots showed Loki looking worried, Sylvie appearing frustrated, and both the God of Mischief and Mobius dressed in suits. In this quick scene, Mobius quips, “A little over the top, don’t you think?”

At the D23 Expo 2022 held in September, Disney unveiled additional footage, which has not yet made its way online. Total Film, reporting from the event in Los Angeles, provided a summary of the teaser, describing it as having a rather creepy vibe.

In the footage, Loki informs Mobius about the events involving He Who Remains (Jonathan Major) in the Season 1 finale, revealing the villain’s face concealed behind a wall in the TVA. Loki then shares that he witnessed terrible, horrifying events when the timeline fractured after Sylvie attempted to eliminate the antagonist at the end of Season 1. Intriguing and chilling, isn’t it?

Loki season 2 cast and crew

The highly anticipated second season of Loki will see the return of a talented ensemble, including Tom Hiddleston, Jonathan Majors (as Kang), Owen Wilson (as Mobius), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (as Ravonna Renslayer), Wunmi Mosaku (as Hunter B-15), Eugene Cordero (as Casey AKA Hunter K-5E), and Sophia DiMartino. DiMartino’s reappearance as Sylvie was confirmed not long ago when she was spotted on set alongside Hiddleston.

Intriguingly, leaked images captured DiMartino outside a McDonald’s, sipping from a straw and disposable cup. Eagle-eyed fans have observed that her outfit bears a remarkable similarity to McDonald’s employee uniforms from the 1970s. This mysterious detail has left fans eager to uncover the significance of this twist in the upcoming season.

Showrunner Kate Herron has announced her departure from Loki, revealing that she never intended to helm a second season. “I’m really happy to watch it as a fan next season,” Herron shared with Deadline. “I just think I’m proud of what we did here and I’ve given it my all.”

Taking the reins for Season 2 are directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who, according to Deadline, will “co-direct a majority of the episodes for season two.” The duo has recently directed two episodes of the Marvel series Moon Knight, featuring Oscar Isaac as a superhero grappling with dissociative identity disorder.

Season 1 writers Michael Waldron and Eric Martin are set to return, with Martin assuming head writing responsibilities from Waldron.

In an interesting development, MCU leaker Cinestealth has suggested that Henry Cavill may be in talks to portray Marcus Milton/Hyperion, as reported by Inverse. However, it’s advisable to approach this claim with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Loki season 2 plot

The plot for Loki Season 2 remains shrouded in mystery, but it has been hinted at D23 that the upcoming chapter will have significant ties to the Multiverse Saga. Tom Hiddleston, speaking with Marvel, expressed excitement about the possibilities and mentioned being engaged in “deep, deep, deep discussions” following the announcement of the second season. However, the actor has remained tight-lipped ever since.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw shared her enthusiasm about exploring “deeper, darker places” for her character, Ravonna Renslayer. Initially portrayed as an anti-hero and potential love interest for Mobius, Renslayer was later unveiled as a villain loyal to the TVA. The season finale saw her embark on a quest for free will. “She wants to [find] who pulled the wool over her eyes,” explained head writer Michael Waldron. “She is a scary customer to be out there in the Multiverse. So we’ll see what happens.”

The season finale had us all on the edge of our seats as Sylvie, Loki’s variant and love interest, sent Loki to another dimension to finally confront He Who Remains. Although the encounter didn’t provide the satisfaction Sylvie had hoped for, she found herself alone at the Citadel at the End of Time. Sophia Di Martino, in a chat with RadioTimes, said she wasn’t sure if her character would return, but she did note that Sylvie’s final scene is “an interesting place to start another chapter” (via Marvel). Well, guess what? We now know she’s coming back!

Now, let’s talk about Kang. He Who Remains is a Kang Variant, and in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, we finally meet Kang the Conqueror in full force. Here’s where the spoilers come in: Kang had ambitious plans to travel the multiverse, destroying entire timelines to prevent his other variants from tampering with time and causing devastating incursions. Thankfully, the ant-family managed to thwart his plans, and he was seemingly defeated.

In the Quantumania post-credits scene, we’re introduced to the Council of Cross-Time Kangs, which is essentially a group of numerous Kang Variants. These leaders are determined to prevent Marvel’s heroes from delving too deep into the multiverse. This could hint at the appearance of multiple Kang variants in Loki Season 2, an idea further suggested in the second stinger. In that scene, Loki and Mobius observe a presentation by another variant named Victor Timely. Loki, visibly frightened, recognizes this man from the Citadel, although Mobius doesn’t quite grasp the enormity of the threat. It appears that Mobius and Loki might be tracking Kang variants through time.

Tom Hiddleston, when asked about Loki Season 2 by Total Film, shared: “What can I say? It’s very much continuing to excite and challenge me. At the end of Season 1, the story isn’t over. I think that’s really clear. Loki’s almost more unstable, and as turbulent, passionate, and chaotic as he’s ever been. And maybe some of that needs resolution. There’s stuff to unpack.”

Michael Waldron has also provided some hints about what fans can expect in the upcoming season. Speaking with Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast, he said, “In creating the show in the first place, the only way it’s worth doing to me is that we can find a new story to tell with this character.” He believes they’ve discovered “new emotional ground to cover with Loki,” which sets the stage for Season 2. Waldron adds, “We absolutely found that. It’s a great continuation of that story that feels different from Season 1 and hopefully will subvert expectations.”

Loki Season 2 Theories: Chaos, Multiverse War, and the Kang Connection

Given the chaotic conclusion of the first season, numerous theories are swirling around Loki Season 2. Sylvie ignited a multiverse war, Loki is stranded in another dimension, and a more dangerous variant of He Who Remains has risen to power.

In the new timeline where Loki finds himself trapped, a statue of Kang the Conqueror stands tall, suggesting that Kang, a variant of He Who Remains, has assumed leadership of the TVA and possibly all other timelines. However, Quantumania complicates matters a bit. With Kang seemingly dead, it’s plausible that he either survived his encounter with the ant-family or that the variant ruling the TVA is an entirely different Kang.

One theory suggests that even though Mobius and Hunter B-15 don’t remember Loki in the new timeline, Sylvie might. This could be possible since Sylvie was the one who killed He Who Remains and sent Loki to this alternate reality.

Another intriguing speculation is that Ravonna might become Kang’s new love interest, as her character is romantically involved with him in the comics.

There’s also the possibility of a TVA uprising on the horizon. With all the TVA agents having their memories erased due to He Who Remains’ death, Loki might be the key to helping them remember what transpired. Once they recall the horror of being abducted from their timelines and brainwashed, the TVA could unite to overthrow Kang.

An especially fascinating theory emerges in light of the releases of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With the multiverse now wide open, could Loki join forces with Wanda/Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange? The idea of other MCU characters making appearances in alternate timelines is certainly within the realm of possibility, adding an exciting twist to the upcoming season.

Photos from the Loki Season 2 set have also ignited some intriguing theories. After being mentioned in Ms. Marvel, Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) was spotted on a movie poster. As fans know, he’s both a Bollywood star and a part-time Eternal in the MCU. In addition, another poster advertises a film called “Zaniac.” Zaniac is an obscure Thor villain with the ability to possess people and make them commit gruesome murders. 

Could he be making a debut in Season 2? It seems we’ll just have to wait and see what surprises Marvel has in store for us.
