Places To Visit In Allahabad
1. Triveni Sangam
What makes Allahabad a divine place is the confluence of three holy river Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Both Ganga and Yamuna are revered rivers in Hindu mythology, rises from the Himalayas in Uttarakhand. Saraswati is said to be the hidden river or it flows underground and is equally revered in the Rig Veda. This divine sangam is seen at Triveni Sangam at Prayag.
2. Kumbh Mela 2019
Kumbh Mela is a significant Hindu Mela, held in every 12 years in Allahabad or in rotation with other three places Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain. In Allahabad it is organized around the convergence of the three holy rivers of Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarasvati, known as Triveni Sangam , also an Ardh kumbh mela is held in every six years .The next Kumbh Mela is going to get started From January 2019.
3. Khusro Bagh
A place of peace and historic significance Khusro Bagh was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir, the amalgamation of three tombs in the garden, one of them is of the Emperor Jahangir wife Shah Begum and other is of his son Khusro, his daughter Nithar. Apart from all three mausoleums Mother’s tomb is architecturally the best.
4. Allahabad Fort
Built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, in the year of 1583, it’s one of the largest fort that has huge and massive walls and three gateways. This fort has sundry prestigious historic sites that are preserved till now. Situated on the bank of river Yamuna, this is just a 2 km away from the Sangam.
5. Anand Bhawan
An excellent piece of History, it is different from other house museums. This place holds the memories of Bygone era of Nehru’s with a subtle approach to preserve the paramountcy it holds. Constructed by Motilal Nehru, in 1930’s , it is not only the family home but an important centre of activity during India’s struggle to attain freedom from British Colonial Rule.
6. Hanuman Mandir
Being the major tourist attraction, thousands of devotees come to Allahabad to visit this holy edifice every year. Also, popular as Bade Hanumanji Mandir, the uniqueness of this shrine that is that the Lord Hanuman effigy, lies in the recline posture. Hanuman Mandir possesses the country’s rich mythological heritage.
7. Alfred Park
Alfred Park, is an open garden located at Georgetown and is surrounded by Tagore town, was built in 1870 to mark Prince Alfred’s visit to the city Allahabad. Lately, it was renamed after freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad, who sacrificed his life, shot himself with his last bullet during the Indian independence struggle in 1931.
8. Allahabad Planetarium
The former house of Nehru-Gandhi family, is converted into Jawaharlal Planetarium in the year 1979 near to Anand Bhawan, that was the former house of Nehru-Gandhi family. Built to promote the scientific knowledge, it’s the ideal place for kids to enjoy and attain skills or make them more inclined toward the life and career in science.
9. Ashoka Pillar
Erected in 3rd century BC by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka. Inscriptions of Ashoka, were written in the Brahmi Script over the exterior of the pillar. These edicts depict that Ashoka was an extremely tolerant and benevolent monarch. The pillar made of polished stone extends 10.7 m in height. In 16th century the pillar was moved to Allahabad, near the Allahabad Fort during the Mughal reign.
10. All Saints Cathedral
Being the third oldest church in Allahabad, this cathedral is an enormous Gothic- style edifice. Located in a large open space at a major crossroads, was designed to accommodate up to 400 people in Victorian Times.
11. Magh Mela
An annual fair (mela) held for 41 days, at Triveni sangam in Allahabad. Also called as Mini Kumbh Mela, this fair is carried out in the month of Magh (month of February) and countless devotes from the far-flung places attended this Mela with full of enthusiasm. Pilgrims get facilitated with all the amenities organized by Uttar Pradesh government.
12. Mankameshwar Temple
Mankameshwar means the god of fulfillment of wishes. The temple is situated close to Minto park, on the bank of river Yamuna and is dedicated to the Lord Shiva. From the terrace of Mankameshwar temple, the view of the Yamuna river is breath-taking and mesmerizing specially at the night in the moonlight.
