Places To Visit In Jodhpur
1. Mehrangarh Fort
This landmark structure of Jodhpur built in 1459 by its founder Rao Jodha figures among the most massive forts in India. Located atop a 400-ft hillock and guarded by an enormous wall measuring 120-ft in height (at places) and 70-ft in width that runs around the premises, and seven gates that control access, this impressive structure spans across 5 km of hilly terrain.
2. Umaid Bhawan Palace
While being one of the largest private opulent residences in the world, this palatial structure also showcases the benevolence of Maharaja Umaid Singh who built the massive structure to provide employment for his people during times of drought and famine suffered because of a hermit’s curse. However, the palace was completed in 1943 and served as the royal home for just 4 years until Umaid Singh’s death in 1947.
3. Bal Samand Lake
This artificial lake/reservoir, constructed in the 12th century, catered to the water requirements of Mandora, the former capital of Marwar. The calm and scenic lake inspired Maharaja Jaswant Singh to construct a lavish summer palace overlooking the lakefront during the 17th century. The palace, now converted into a heritage hotel and the beautiful lake settings, are worth a visit.
4. Jaswant Thada
Crafted in white marble, Jaswant Thada is a one-of-a-kind funerary complex which has been designed on the lines of a traditional Hindu temple. Named after Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, the memorial was built in 1899 by his son Sadar Singh, the structure houses cenotaphs of several members of the Marwar royal family and a cremation site as well.
5. Mandore Gardens
Located in Marwar’s former capital of Mandore, these gardens are an extension of the Mehrangarh Fort. These lush settings too are home to several cenotaphs/memorials structured like Hindu temples. Impressive multi-level red sandstone structures supported by ornate columns and beautiful spires are a delight for architecture and photography enthusiasts!
6. Maha mandir
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Maha mandir built in the year 1812 is a majestic structure embellished with impressive sculptures and intricate stonework that enthrall tourists. A popular haunt of Shiva worshippers, the temple also houses an excellent array of carvings in different yoga postures.
7. Kaylana Lake
An artificial reservoir built in 1871, by the erstwhile prime minister of Jodhpur, Pratap Singh is an extremely scenic spot located less than 10 km west of Jodhpur on the Jaisalmer Road. Records reveal that a couple of palaces and gardens constructed by Takhat Singh and Bhim Singh were razed to the ground to create the lake, another part of which is also known as Takhat Lake.
8. Sardar Samand Lake
Yet another artificial lake right next to a magnificent palace, the Sardar Samand Lake and Palace settings draw tourists who are looking to experience an opulent holiday or business visit in Jodhpur. This palace built in 1933 by Maharaja Umaid Singh served as his summer retreat apart from doubling up like a hunting lodge for the Royals. Today it is one of the famous heritage hotels in the city replete with luxurious amenities.
9. Umaid Gardens and Zoo
One of the widespread public gardens in the city, this sprawling 82 acres of lush terrain with entry gates at 5 different points, houses impeccably maintained verdant lawn spaces interspersed with ornate fountains, a garden with stunning roses and seasonal flowers that enhance its appeal, a Zoo, a library and the Sardar Government Museum within its premises.
10. Machia Biological Park
An integral part of the Machia Forests, the biological park is a delight for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Viewpoints at vantage locations enable visitors to get a panoramic glimpse of the settings including the calm waters of the Kaylana Lake located nearby and spot numerous birds that haunt the landscape.
11. Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park
The meticulously restored desert eco-system at the base of the Mehrangarh Fort is a pleasure to behold. The area previously dominated by the invasive Prosopis Juliflora or Paavola has since been rid of it, and indigenous species of flora native to the arid terrain have been nurtured successfully in just under a decade.
